With the release of my first book ‘Hot Mess Alchemist’ whizzing up on the 19th of July I thought I’d share with you some of the concepts in the book.

Today we’re going to have a look at the idea of ‘ External Environment vs Internal Landscape’ and the differences between them. This is important because once you learn to discern between the two you can avoid getting into rabbit hole spirals of shame or comparison.

Your Internal Landscape is made up of all the stories you tell yourself that protect you or validate you in some way. Your beliefs, your thoughts, your attitudes, your defences and traumas. It’s your magical inner land.

Your External Environment is everything that you have no ‘control’ over outside of your own being. External Environment refers to the outside world, including but not limited to: the news; opinions of others; the happenings of and on social media; anything with an algorithm; your family; your friends; your work colleagues and their points of view and opinions.

Without realising it, we soak up the External Environment and it shapes our opinions and beliefs. What makes this dangerous is that we do this unquestioningly and without critical thought – we just absorb it unthinkingly.

This can really bite us on the bum when the absorbed External Environment clashes with our Internal Landscape. We fall into a loss of self, there’s a disconnect between how we want to feel and the stories we are telling ourselves. And there are LOTS of stories that the External Environment want us to believe: stories about our worth; about our body shape and diet; our level of education and perceived ability; stories about our sexuality and gender. It can feel like shame and othering and deep sadness and despair.

We poke around this topic more in the book and of course there’s the accompanying Hot Mess Alchemist Workbook full of tools and worksheets that’s your’s free when you buy the book.

If this resonates with you then set your alarms and GET READY- Hot Mess Alchemist will be available to buy from Amazon on Wednesday the 19th of July.
