I am literally, as I write this, working a thing out in my brain.
So you’re thinking Carrie? Yes Carrie, I am having a thought.
Hokay, so for me to sit down and write this weekly newsletter these things generally occur:
- If writing the newsletter hasn’t been my first task of the day, I will take myself out for a walk in the woods before I sit and settle. Why? Well a walk helps me clear my mind and shake off the stagnant energy of sitting at a desk. I very rarely know what I’ll be talking about before I sit down to write (does it show?) and that fresh air and leg stretch gives me a period of vacant openness where the pressing thoughts slip away and more creative energy can slide in.
- More times than not, if I’m sitting down to write I’ll stick on a focus music track full of subliminal affirmations. It’s on at a very low volume, but I like there to be some noise around me, mainly so my brain isn’t looking for distractions! Sometimes I put the radio on downstairs if there’s no one else in the house. In either instance it allows me to have a place to assign unintended noises – oh it’s just the radio, nothing to see here Subconscious. Honestly, it would be easier to herd cats than it is to get me to concentrate!
- This next one is surprisingly important, I have two scents that I use to promote the right vibe. In my treatment room I go with Neal’s Yard Calming Room Spray with Rose and Geranium . And when I’m writing I use a Tisserand pulse point roller ball called Happy Vibes, which is Lemon Tea Tree, Bergamot and Nutmeg. Bergamot is definitely one of my most favourite smells. For YEARS I neglected the fact that I am a fully sensed and therefore sensual being, just as I know I can’t sit and create in a scratchy vest, I now understand that I can enhance my productivity and wellbeing by working with my senses.
- Hokay so when the scent vibe is a tick, and the auditory vibe is a tick, it’s time to get typing.
But the reason I got to thinking about this?
I used the wrong roller ball.(Dum dum Dummmmm! #firstworldproblemsy’all) I chose the also nice smelling Tisserand ‘Find Focus’, it’s a blend of Rosemary, Grapefruit and Orange Leaf. I mean it’s fine and all, as you can see I’ve managed to get words down on paper.
BUT…
I was all like wait! What? WHY?? I mean seriously, it doesn’t matter really that my wrists now smell like Sindy Doll shoes from the 80’s (okay, just me who remembers the smell of plastic toy footwear?). I thought focus, yeah I could do with some of that, instead of actually thinking about the smells that make me feel expansive and communicative (i.e. HAPPY!).
It showed me not just how I choose to elevate my personal environment but also how much stock I put in routine, or is it ritual? Either way, these are the habits that ease me into a state of focus and creation. Partially this is because they appeal to me, but equally importantly it’s because I have practiced them – I’ve anchored them in to my life
So what are your habits, or should I say Anchors?? Because I’ve certainly listed out a couple of my Wellbeing Anchors above, by this I mean things that scintillate my senses and let my brain know that all is well and it’s safe to be creative.
Do you have a habit of walking the dog early in the day before the school run? Or three cups of tea before sitting down to do accounts? Do you have a Power Play list for the gym, that you also whack on when you need to deep clean the house (I’m telling ya, if you ever need to paint a staircase it’s happy house all the way)?
By having an awareness of the things that make us feel good and keep us going, by building up our tool box of Wellbeing Anchors, we can support ourselves whilst we create glorious lives.
Take a moment now and think about the rituals you already have in place AND what are the actions, routines, and sensory moments that you truly enjoy, which would also enhance your life and wellbeing were you to work them into your daily life more often.
If you’d find it helpful, please go grab My Little Book Of Wellbeing Anchors and feel free to share this with your favourite fidget pants friend or family member!
Hokay, that’s all from me for the week, gotta go scrub the smell of Sindy Doll shoes off my wrists!
Big love
Carrie
